The Perito Moreno Glacier is located in the Los Glaciares National Park in Santa Cruz, Argentina. It is one of the most important tourist attractions in the Argentine Patagonia. It has a length of 30 km (20 miles), and a total surface of 257km2 (160 square miles). The terminus of the Perito Moreno glacier is 5 km wide, with an average height of 60 meters above the surface of the water, and with a total ice depth of 170 meters.
Rupture of the Perito Moreno Glacier
The Perito Moreno glacier, is one of the world's few advancing glaciers. The glacier first ruptured in 1917, and the last rupture occurred in March 2006. It ruptures, on average, about every four to five years.
The glacier is named after Francisco Pascasio Moreno (1852-1919), a passionate argentine pioneer, researcher, explorer, geographer, anthropologist, ethnographer, paleontologist, sociologist, educator, legislator, and above all a very sensitive human being. He was a relentless traveler, a lover of nature and the first Argentine who visited Patagonia in the year 1874. In his first trip he carried out researches on the geological formation of the continent, its flora and fauna and its natural history. He made friends among indigenous chiefs, except for Shaihueque, the chief who condemned him to death; however Moreno managed to escape from captivity on a precarious boat.
In spite of his many expeditions to the south he did never reach the Perito Moreno glacier.
